Up for auction is my 1996 Ford E350 Econoline Club Wagon XLT equipped with the International/Navistar 7.3 Liter Powerstroke Turbo Diesel engine and ZF5 Manual Transmission. Yes, you read that right, I converted this van to manual transmission. I assure you this is the only one like it currently on the market, and will probably be the only one you’ll see for quite some time.
I looked for a long time to find a nice 7.3 passenger van in the New England area. After performing all of the work below, I am reluctantly selling because I am moving to a house that has no garage and will have an immediate need for AWD when winter hits. I had planned on swapping this to 4x4 but my timeline just won’t allow it.
The van runs and drives great with minimal smoke. Typical blowby for a 7.3. Passes Injector Buzz and Contribution tests. Runs about 3 psi and 500 degrees F EGT cruising unloaded at 70 mph. I have put roughly 3,000 miles on it so far without major issues, averaging about 18.5 mpg mixed driving. It is a slug when cold, and a slightly faster slug when warmed up, but like any 7.3 it pulls like an Ox. As they say, 0-60? Yes. The turbo was nice and tight when I checked it. The tires have roughly 5000 miles on them, mounted on stock aluminum Alcoa wheels that have some typical clear coat issues but still show well. It goes down the highway nice and straight.
It has a Hydra Chip tuner which is programmed using stock ECM code ALF6 (1996 F250/F350 manual transmission) and has stock and high idle tunes. I tried a few of the performance tunes but they had a hesitation in the mid range. I was told that custom tunes may be required being a ZF5 van which they never made, but I never explored this any further. I was more interested in the Hydra to bypass the automatic transmission programming and add high idle to improve cold weather warm up.
The ZF5 transmission shifts smooth and there are no grinds between gears. This is a 4x4 transmission with modified bolt on tail shaft parking brake assembly for 2wd use, from an FSuperduty. A 4x4 transfer case will bolt directly to this transmission, making for an easy 4x4 conversion which was my end goal. I made the clutch pedal assembly from components noted below as well as some custom parts.
This van came up from the south, 99% rust free! Oil pan is rock solid. The body has some dings, dents, scratches, rock chips, etc as shown. There are a few rusty spots on the drip rails, which is the only real rust on the body or frame. It looks like the drip rails were sealed in the past, but some areas are starting to separate again. We recently got 10”+ of rain and I sensed some interior seepage since it was a little humid inside and noticed some minor staining on the headliner edges, after being closed up after the rain. Up until the heavy rain I never noticed any issue.
The interior is the “Chateau” type that seats 7, with 4 captains chairs and a rear bench that folds into bed. Rear heat/AC. AC blows cool, but not bold. Excellent sound system with upgraded speakers, subwoofers, amplifier, Bluetooth and XM capable head unit, sounds great. Overall, the interior is just shy of “Excellent” condition, given the age and miles.
